The Zambezi is Africa's fourth-longest river, and for the eleven kilometres above the falls it barely seems to move at all. That stillness is deceptive. Beneath the flat water the river is already gathering toward a 1,708-metre basalt lip, over which it drops 108 metres into the First Gorge.
